MEGADETH adalah grup thrash metal dari Amerika yang dibentuk pada tahun 1983 dan di motori oleh Dave Mustaine. Didirikan oleh gitaris / vokalis Dave Mustaine dan bassist David Ellefson setelah kepergian Mustaine dari METALLICA. Lineup asli termasuk David Ellefson bassis, gitaris Kerry King dan drummer Lee Rash. Tak lama kemudian Kerry King berangkat ke SLAYER band lamanya dan digantikan oleh Chris Lee Rash Polandia dan digantikan oleh Gar Samuelson. Dengan formasi tersebut, pada tahun 1985 debut album "Killing Is My Business ... and Bisnis Is Good" dirilis.
Sukses di album pertama membuat
MEGADETH
mulai diirik oleh mayor label dan pada akhirnya dikontrak oleh Capitol Record dan keluarlah album ke-2 di tahun 1986 "Peace Sells..But Who's Buying", meraih sukses besar dan perlahan ketenaran MEGADETH siap untuk menyamai pendahulunya METALLICA untuk merebutkan posisi puncak sebagai "Most Popular Trash Metal"
Ketenaran merupakan salah satu penyebab dari berubahnya Mustaine. Perilaku Mustaine menjadi tidak menentu karena masalah narkoba dan alkohol. Sebelum album ketiga mereka, Mustaine memecat Chris Lee Rash Polandia dan Gar Samuelson, yang digantikan oleh gitaris Jeff Young dan drummer Chuck Behler. Ada beberapa perubahan formasi selama bertahun-tahun, yang berpuncak
sengit
ketika keluar anggota asli David Ellefson pada tahun 2002.
Grup ini bubar di tahun 2002 karena Mustaine mengalami cedera otot Saturday Night Palsy dan awalnya Mustaine pikir dia tidak mungkin dapat bermain gitar lagi, untungnya dia pulih dan
band
direformasi dengan formasi baru untuk merilis album "The System Has Failed" tahun 2004 dan diterima dengan sangat baik.
MEGADETH memiliki maskot yang selalu tampil dalam berbagai album mereka. Nama maskotnya adalah "Vic Rattlehead". Tampil dengan sosok kerangka manusia yang memakai jas penutup mata, mulut yang terkunci, lubang telinga yang tertutup, sebuah penjelmaan dari frasa "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." Pada album "United Abominations" 2007, tampilan Vic telah mengalami perubahan, setelah Mustaine memberikan sayembara di DeviantArt, dimenangkan oleh John Lorenzi. Vic tampil bukan dengan sosok kerangka lagi, tetapi tampil dengan sosok orang tua dengan rambut hitam yang panjang, berkulit pucat dan berurat.
